All Natural Breads

     In 1992, Friendship Farms began wholesaling its homemade breads, pastries, and other products.  The company purchased a French-made hearth oven and began baking bread daily and delivering to select stores throughout the Pittsburgh area.  The variety was increased to include many favorites from recipes that had been in the family for years.  The breads are made incorporating only natural unprocessed, unbleached flours, and organic whole grains and flours.  At Friendship Farms,  we go to great measures to develop homemade, natural products and to keep their homemade quality.  
     Our Italian breads are made with pure olive oil.  Butter and canola oil are used as shortenings rather than cheaper substitutes such as margarine, soy bean oil, or lard.  Pure maple syrup and honey serve as natural sweeteners in our breads.  The bread doughs are allowed to rise slowly to add to their unique flavor and texture.  Our skilled bakers must hand form most of these natural homemade breads because of the dough's delicate nature.  The loaves are then baked in authentic hearth ovens (imported from France).  Unlike many of the factory style bakeries so common today, Friendship Farms does not compromise in bringing you the finest natural breads and baked goods possible.
 

Our bakery hours are as follows:
Mon. through Fri. - 10am - 6pm
Sat. - 10am - 3pm Closed on Sundays
We are also closed the day of and the day before all major holidays.

Below is a list of all of the breads we make. We are always open for new ideas. Please feel free to call with your suggestions!

Cinnamon Raisin

Straight from our grandmother's recipe, this is a mildly sweet bread with a hint of cinnamon, loaded with plump dark raisins.  *Note:  This bread is traditionally served drizzled with a white confectioner's sugar icing.  In its sliced form, however, it is not iced.

Country Corn
Our Country Corn bread is a soft textured mild bread with the delicious taste of buttered sweet corn.  Unlike many corn breads prepared with a batter, this yeast bread is wonderfully moist and may be used in many sandwiches or as a unique dinner bread.

Country French
This bread is an excellent all around choice for most sandwiches or dinners.  Our Country French loaf is slightly more dense than our other French loaves and is one of our more popular retail breads.  This bread contains no added fat or sugar!

Cracked Oats & Honey
As its name indicates, this healthful bread is made with a delicious oatmeal, butter, and honey mixture.  For added crunch, we mix in organic cracked oats and then roll the loaf in additional wholesome oatmeal. 

Five Grain French
We take our famous French bread and add five organic cracked grains (barley, corn, oats, rye, and wheat) to give this bread its delicious fermented grain taste and crunchy texture.  This bread contains no added fat or sugar! 

Five Grain Sourdough (Organic)
We use organic wheat to make the whole wheat starter used in this bread.  This wholesome starter, combined with five organic cracked grains (barley, corn, oats, rye, and wheat) give this bread its unique rustic flavor with a little bite.  This bread contains no added fat or sugar!

Flax Seed Rye (Organic)
This bread is made with our organic rye flour starter.  We add pure wildflower honey and organically grown flax seeds to give it its wholesome, nutty taste.  Recent studies show that flax seeds can have a positive influence on everything from cancer to heart disease to cholesterol levels.

French (Baguette, Homestyle, & Round)
Like our Country French bread, our French breads are a delicious choice for sandwiches, dinners, breakfast toast, etc.  They have a chewy and crunchy crust and a delicious soft middle.  The texture of these breads is slightly lighter and more airy than our Country French and Italian breads.  This bread contains no added fat or sugar!

French Dill
For herb lovers, our French Dill bread combines a chewy French bread crust with the fresh taste of dill weed.  It is an excellent choice for light sandwiches and dinners.  This bread contains no added fat or sugar!

French Tomato Basil
Again we use our French bread and add sun-dried tomatoes and basil.   Tomato Basil bread makes a delicious light sandwich or accompaniment to pastas and other dinners.   This bread contains no added fat or sugar!

Garden Herb & Seed Baguette
The Garden Herb & Seed Baguette is a French dough mixed with the fresh tastes of oregano, onion, and garlic.  The loaves are rolled in sesame and poppy seeds before baking to add additional flavor and crunch.

Garlic Parmesan Focaccia
Garlic Parmesan Focaccia is a flat bread made with organic whole wheat flour (made from certified organic wheat grown and milled on our farm), pure olive oil and garlic.  It is topped with parmesan cheese and parsley.

Honey Oatmeal Raisin
This hearty breakfast bread is made with oatmeal, sweetened with honey, and loaded with delicious golden raisins.

Italian Focaccia
This flavorful Focaccia is made with pure olive oil, sun-dried tomatoes, basil, and garlic, and is topped with parmesan cheese and parsley.  Focaccia can be used in many ways, from sandwiches and pizza crust to hors d' ouerves.

Italian Peasant
Italian Peasant bread is a simple but rustic bread made with organic whole wheat flour (made from certified organic wheat grown and milled on our farm) and pure olive oil.

Kristapoma (Fig-Nut)
This traditional Easter bread is another favorite from our grandmother's cookbook.  It is prepared from a mildly sweet dough loaded with figs, walnuts, and golden raisins. It is a popular holiday bread and is traditionally served toasted and drizzled with honey.

Maple Apple Raisin
This classic bread is a moist, delicious breakfast bread loaded with dark raisins and apples and sweetened with locally made pure maple syrup, and topped off with a creamy maple icing.

Monastery (St. Vincent Bread)
This is our version of the famous St. Vincent Bread.  Based on the original recipe, we make this bread with flour that comes from locally grown soft wheat milled at the historic gristmill at St. Vincent Archabbey. Like the bread baked at the monastery years ago, this bread tends to have a very hard crust, a coarse texture, and a nutty, earthy flavor. Monastery bread is best toasted and served with honey or jam.  This bread contains no added fat or sugar!

Rustic Rye
Our Rustic Rye bread is made with whole wheat flour, a dark rye starter prepared from our homegrown rye grain, organic cracked rye grain, and molasses.  This bread is excellent for hearty sandwiches or as an accompaniment for soups or stews.

Seven Grain (Organic)
One of the most popular Friendship Farms varieties, this crunchy organic bread is made with seven organic cracked grains (barley, corn, millet, oats, rye, spelt, and wheat) and organic whole wheat flour.  It is sweetened with pure wildflower honey which complements its wholesome grain flavor.

Sourdough Potato
This potato bread is made with a mellow starter and whole potatoes (including the healthy peel).  Sourdough Potato is a delicious all purpose "white" bread with the flavor of buttered potatoes and a mild sourdough bite.

Sunflower Sourdough (Organic)
Our Organic Sunflower Sourdough bread is made with an organic whole wheat starter, organic wheat flour with wheat germ, and organic sunflower seeds.

Whole Grain
This delicious whole wheat bread is made with unbleached wheat flour, stone-ground whole wheat flour, organic cracked wheat, molasses, and honey. This bread is excellent for hearty sandwiches or as an accompaniment for soups or stews.


*NOTE: All of our breads are considered "low fat." Some have no fat or sugar added and therefore are fat free except for what is naturally found in wheat and other grains.
